Do you allow an interview subject to approve what words you use of theirs in a documentary production? That question confronted one of the students working on the documentary. We contacted numerous churches and heard back from one. The minister at that church was willing to talk to us but was fearful that in editing his words we might change the theological position and would change the meaning. I understand the minister’s fear of being misinterpreted and there is a heavy ethical burden on a film maker to not change the meaning of the words in editing the project. But from an educator/filmmaker’s standpoint, giving and measure of editorial control to an interview subject sets a bad precedent, compromises the integrity of the production, and sets a bad example for the students.
Another example of this same idea happened last Friday. Senator Dick Durbin visited campus and during his talk to the class a student asked him about gay marriage and he shared his views. At the press conference I asked him if he would be willing to reiterate those views on camera for the documentary. He said yes and gave a great statement about how as the younger generation gets older this will become a non-issue since most young people can’t understand why two people no matter what their gender who love each other can’t be married. In this situation, I hit him from out of the blue with this request so to be sure he really meant it when he said it was okay I have mailed a letter to his press secretary to get his written permission. This decision practices good ethics, since he wasn’t there expecting to be interviewed for a documentary on this subject he deserves the right to say that he would rather not participate.
Ethics and integrity connected to the media may sound crazy in the times we live, but are an important trust that is given to and is earned by media professionals. Students must realize that the subjects they place in front of the camera are people and deserve respect before you tear them down and make them look foolish. That’s right, isn’t it?
Finally, here’s another new addition of MC-TV….
